Liz Maher, the latest full-time interior designer to join AK Design Group, isn’t really a new addition to the talented team. Liz actually interned at AK Design Group before completing her interior architecture degree at Samford University in Birmingham, AL. While on campus, Liz was involved in the IIDA (International Interior Design Association) chapter, holding the office of President during her senior year. She also served the University as a member of the Student Government Association Senate and as a School of the Arts Ambassador. Originally from Nashville, TN she’s thrilled to be back in her hometown to start her career in hospitality interior design.
Interning at AKDG during the summer of 2017 (and between semesters), Liz racked up valuable hospitality interior design experience. She worked closely with Andrea, contributing on projects with 7 different hotel brands including Homewood Suites, Hampton Inn & Suites, and even a SpringHill Suites in her own “back yard” of Brentwood, TN!
While working on a “Gen 1” Homewood Suites renovation in Texas, Liz was tasked with converting traditional guestroom inventory (9 different room types) into ADA compliant rooms - and without demolition to any interior walls. Challenge accepted! After translating copies of a 25 year-old paper plan set into AutoCAD, Liz adjusted the vanity configurations in the guest bathrooms and then re-arranged the furniture plans in the guest suites to ensure compliant turn-radius’ for wheelchair clearance. The interior design for these room types was then ADA compliant, while limiting the construction costs associated with what is typically a significant scope item.
On the creative side, Liz finds design inspiration all over! From the colors she sees in the great outdoors to architecture in brilliant cities like Chicago and New York. She even follows several designers and architects on social media to get idea inspiration and to stay current on the latest interior design and design technology trends. Liz loves taking an eclectic approach on her projects, figuring out how to mix pieces that wouldn’t normally go together. Then, her favorite part is developing concept and schematic design presentations using software like InDesign, Photoshop, SketchUp and Revit. This is where her vision first comes alive for the Client to see!
Liz loves spending time with her tight knit family and her many cousins, who all happily live within 30 minutes of each other. She also proudly admits that she’s obsessed with her four-legged friend, Nala. In her spare time, Liz and her husband, Jack, like hiking together, finding yummy Mexican restaurants to dine at and hitting up cool coffee shops around Music City.
