As the founder and Design Principal of AK Design Group, Andrea Gillespie fancies herself a Jill of All Trades. Andrea not only works closely with her team overseeing all of the firm’s projects, she also mentors junior designers with hands-on help. Plus, she makes sure to keep open lines of communication with owners, project managers, architects, and contractors, speaking with them regularly to ensure each project runs like a (very pretty) well-oiled machine.
By drawing on her experiences having completed hundreds of branded projects in the upper-midscale and upscale hospitality segments, Andrea skillfully guides the AKDG team to achieving the desired look at prices that are on-point with the objectives of the client. Andrea also places heavy emphasis on the durability of the design - because it’s not enough to just make the interior look beautiful – their interior designs have to stand the test of time so clients get the most out of their FF&E investment.
Andrea is passionate that the firm’s design documentation will supply the level of detail required for a qualified General Contractor to bid the interior design elements with minimal change orders. From 2002-2009, as a sub-contractor for Hilton Worldwide, Andrea had the incredible opportunity of reviewing focused-service, Hilton-branded interior design submittals. Thanks, in-part, to this experience, Andrea gained first-hand knowledge of what other interior design firms were providing in their design documentation, and takes great pride knowing that AK Design Group’s presentations, drawings and specifications will more than hold their own.
AK Design Group caters to all tastes, styles, budgets, and locations. They work on numerous projects from coast to coast, but some of Andrea’s favorite locations to work are in college towns, where this diehard fan might just catch a football game. Andrea has also been inspired by recent projects in urban core locations, including a Hampton Inn & Suites in downtown Kansas City. Andrea gets a lot of her design inspiration from her travels, gathering elements, color palettes, and motifs from the area and infusing projects with a local flare.
Originally from Germantown, TN, this University of Alabama graduate now lives with husband David, and their two young daughters in Nashville, TN. She loves cooking and going to live music events, which is perfectly fitting in the Music City. Andrea also enjoys traveling with her family, which gives her the opportunity to share incredible worldly experiences with her kiddos. She is also an avid supporter and fundraiser for St. Jude Children’s Research Hospital, having fundraised as a St. Jude “Hero” during the Nashville Rock ‘n’ Roll 5K race since 2014.
